Statement
Schooled in graphic design, mathematics, martial arts, music, film and occult Kirill Slavin creates surreal and abstract constructions using mostly ink and a brush.
Kirill was born in February 1979 in Minsk, Belarus. After the economic instability that followed the introduction of the ‘free market’ to USSR and the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown, his family decided to move to United States. Kirill was 14 when he moved to Brooklyn, NY. After 2 years of exploring the people and culture of NYC, he and his family relocated to Detroit, MI. The raw industrial landscape and the foreboding sense of isolation of Detroit inspired Kirill to start drawing abstract worlds into which he could potentially escape.
Kirill uses techniques of automated drawing, popularized by Austin Osman Spare, to ‘generate’ his pieces. The technique involves elimination of conscious thought and letting the brush do what it does almost on its own. Familiar structures – faces, people, etc, rise up from that and then the artist has to make a decision wether to bring those things out or ignore them. This abyss of the judgement matrix itself is further inspiration for the artist to continue the work.
